Whanau Support Hui 27 May 2010

·        Isn't it just schools? (How can we embrace our Maori community?)

·        Are we going to be heard?

·        Can we say what we want? Who will we offend?

·        Why not open hui up to everyone?

·        How do you think we should as a school identify our Maori students?

o       What is the rationale for identification?

o       Will it have some relationship to teaching strategy / learning?

o       Maybe not comfortable to identify as Maori if they don't practise tikanga Maori

o       Parents (Maori) are whakama to put selves out there / to come in to school and have a say

·        What do you see as success for your child as Maori?

o       Lawyer

o       unlimited options – education so that they will be able to choose any path they wish.

o       Whakapapa – standing to mihi to people – connecting to others – creating networks of whanau – develops confidence – stand tall, feel part of a larger group

o       Give them Maori role models – sports, academic, artists etc who push academia

o       Careers expo so they know what options are out there

·        What is being Maori?

o       Why not ask the kids?

o       Library Resources (finding iwi / whakapapa)

o       whakapapa – knowledge – giving them the avenues to find this – location

o       Creating a marae – school based, real experience

o       should be an evolving thing (not a 'fit in' model

o       Manaakitanga – Food in the fridge, everyone is welcome here, whakawhanaungatanga

o       Respecting elders

o       Brown skin

o       being staunch in things Maori

o       Some parents haven't got the knowledge ingrained to pass on to their children

·        I'm Pakeha – I want my kids to succeed. I'm not sure what to do.

·        Pepeha – We also have barriers to this i.e. students not knowing/parents not knowing their lineage              Library Resources (Finding Iwi/Whakapapa)

·        Parents: Rules – hard to keep kids under control with all of the 'rights' – at a loss of what to do.

·        Bilingual classes – possibilities

·        Minor greetings schoolwide

·        School Karakia in classes / assemblies etc (Start during Matariki)

·        Karakia home to share with whanau (include translations)

·        School wide teaching of tikanga, and maybe also share tikanga during whanau hui

·        Ask whanau if interested in bi-lingual or Total Immersion class – probably bi-lingual to start

·        Sports personalities and ….

THIS NEEDS TO HAPPEN AT THE BEGINNING OF EACH HUI –
